"The 50 x 50 Project"

"The highest art is the art of living an ordinary life in an extraordinary manner" -- Tibetan Proverb

It seemed like a "clever idea" at the time, a mission to combine my love of learning with turning 50 this November and officially embarking on my second half of life. "Learn 50 new things before turning age 50 in November". Easy enough... or foolishly so I thought. I started with the easy check-offs to establish momentum, even if they lacked any depth of intellectual or spiritual value. I can however say that since the 50 x 50 project began, I've learned to blow an egg through a perfectly in tact shell, pimp a tee-shirt, survive 1 day without the internet and make chutney from Tamarind. With the help of my "Tribe of Colleagues, Family and Friends" I've learned to "Paint on Water" "Practice Mindful Meditation" and even had a sit down conversation with a Rock Star". However, the AH HA has truthfully not been in the learning but the unlearning. It has been in getting rid of old patterns, behaviors, beliefs and pure stuff that have accumulated over 50 years and outlived their usefulness. Here's the thing... "Changing established behavior is not a quick check-off and you don't unlearn in an afternoon".

What things do you need to get rid of to clear the clutter and find your life? My little 50 x 50 project has grown to include "Throw Out 50 Things" - a great book I highly recommend written by Gail Blanke, on clearing both mental and physical clutter.

So Take out the Papers and the Trash, Learn Something New and write me if you would be willing to teach me your special skill before November 28th as part of the 50 x 50 Project. On this month's agenda: Learning to groom a horse, A day with a Nutrition Team, Learning how to Age Make-up for Theatre and perhaps the most difficult challenge "Doing Absolutely Nothing For a Day!"

  Wish me Luck!

A Cool Technology Tool to Impress Your Boss, Your Clients, Your Kids and Your Friends with your Techno Savvy!

I was recently footbooked: A term I made up for that feeling you have....when you think you're up to date on technology and discover a new techno tool that makes your jaw drop. I was footbooked at Best Buy when I took time for the demo of the Livescribe Smart Pen-a tool linked to 21st Century Learning. The pen and accompanying notebooks lets you record audio from lectures, client and team meetings during your note taking and then easily downloads the text notes and full audio to your computer. You can then easily retrieve and replay notes and all of the actual audio by key-word reference.

If I only had this pen, at University while prepping for those exams. What a tool for capturing important meetings and details. Of course, warning: the smart pen has it's perks and perils. Meet with your boss and miss that deadline you promised and he or she can play back the exact conversation. Worse yet, use your smart pen at home with your partner and you may not be able to say "That's not what I said."
